How to Use a DA Score When Choosing SEO Support for a Local Business

StreamlineBy StreamlineOctober 15, 2026No Comments5 Mins Read

For a local business, a strong online presence can help customers find services, compare options and decide whom to contact. That may matter to an auto repair shop, dealership or insurance office just as much as it does to an online retailer. When planning outreach or hiring help to improve visibility, the DA score is one metric worth understanding—but it should never be treated as a verdict on a website’s value.

What a DA score tells you

Domain Authority, often shortened to DA, is a score developed by Moz to estimate a website’s potential to rank in search results compared with other sites. It is based largely on link-related signals and is expressed on a scale from 1 to 100. It is not a score assigned by Google, and a high number does not guarantee that a page will appear near the top of search results.

Think of DA as a comparative measure, not a direct measure of business performance. It can help narrow down a list of websites when you are considering guest articles, partnerships or other link-building opportunities. For a more detailed overview of what a DA score measures and how it compares with other authority metrics, it helps to look beyond the number itself.

Why the number can change

DA is calculated from a changing set of data, including the quality and quantity of links pointing to a site. The score may rise or fall when a site gains or loses links, when Moz updates its index or calculation, or when the wider pool of sites used for comparison changes. A drop does not automatically mean that a business has done something wrong; likewise, a rising score alone does not prove that its marketing is producing more customers.

Scores can also be difficult to compare across tools. Ahrefs Domain Rating and Semrush Authority Score use their own data and methods, so the figures are not interchangeable. If you track a metric over time, use the same provider and consider the trend alongside other evidence rather than comparing numbers as if they shared one scale.

Look at the website, not just its authority

Before pursuing a link from a site, check whether its audience and subject make sense for your business. An automotive repair shop may gain more from a thoughtful mention on a respected local motoring or community website than from a link on an unrelated site with a higher DA. A relevant audience is more likely to find the information useful, and relevance makes the partnership easier to explain to readers.

Review the site’s recent content, signs of genuine readership and the quality of its other links. Look for pages that are maintained and written for people, not a collection of thin articles created mainly to host links. If traffic estimates are available, treat them as estimates; they can still help you form a broader picture, but they do not replace a careful review.

Use several signals when hiring marketing help

Freelancers can assist with tasks such as content writing, local SEO, website updates and outreach. When evaluating a portfolio or a proposed campaign, ask what the work will involve, how success will be measured and what information you will receive. Practical measures might include relevant referring websites, improvements to important landing pages, qualified enquiries or calls from local searchers.

Be cautious of promises to deliver a specific DA increase or a large number of links in a short time. No freelancer can control how a third-party metric changes, and a large link count says little about whether those links are useful. Clear scope, realistic milestones and examples of relevant work are better grounds for choosing support than a single headline score.

Local visibility depends on local signals

For businesses that serve a defined area, marketing should make location and service information easy to understand. Keep your own business details consistent across your website and relevant profiles, and make clear which towns or neighbourhoods you serve. Helpful pages should answer real customer questions—for example, what to bring to an appointment, which services are available or how to request a quote—rather than repeating place names without adding information.

Location can matter for freelancers too. Buyers looking for a writer, designer or marketing specialist may prefer someone in a particular city or country, whether for shared working hours, local knowledge or language needs. Freelancers using Osdire can add those details to their profiles to improve Osdire freelancer visibility; the guide explains how to add a location so buyers can find relevant talent in location-based searches.

A balanced way to assess opportunities

Use DA as an initial comparison point, then check relevance, content quality, audience and likely referral value. For hiring decisions, pair any authority metrics with a review of the freelancer’s experience, communication and proposed approach. For a local business, the goal is not to collect impressive scores; it is to help the right people discover useful information and take a meaningful next step.

By treating DA as one clue among several, businesses can make more informed decisions about outreach and digital support. A modest authority score on a relevant, trustworthy site may be more valuable than a larger number attached to an audience that has little reason to care about your services.
